Last week I wrote about the best thing about living in Kampala (see here), and this week I am going to tell you about the best thing about living in Uganda - SAFARI. While Uganda does not have the quantity of wildlife that its neighbors Kenya and Tanzania may boast, it sure does have some quality. We took Jon on a quick spin around Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Murchison Falls National Park. Although we didn't see any babies that could dance, we spotted quite a few little ones that deserve a good 'awwwww'.
In addition, we saw Ugandan kob and their babies, Colobus monkeys, red-tail monkeys, Vervet monkeys, hartebeests, bushbucks, crocodiles, lots of bird life including a face-to-face with a Crested Crane, and a single, solitary, somewhat raggedy, old lion. Not too shabby. We also enjoyed views of the falls from a boat and from the top. Here are a few highlights in photo form:
Having experienced two of my most favorite things in the span of a week makes me feel very fortunate to be living in this crazy place, and I can tell you it was exactly what I needed. Are you tempted to come and visit yet?
(do you ever get the feeling that this blog is sponsored by the Ugandan tourism agency? I assure you I act on a completely independent basis and my only motive is to lure my favorite people to Uganda so I can spend some QT with them, and by them, I mean you. what are you waiting for?)
(I conveniently left out the part of this mini vacay that featured bats in our room, a broken shower and coffee that tasted like it might have been brewed in one of the muddy puddles that made the roads nearly impassible on this journey, but those things just make the trip a little more exciting, don't you think?)
(left to right) baby buffalo, baby Oribi, baby baboon, baby Dik Dik, baby elephant, baby warthog, baby giraffe and baby hippopotamus |
Murchison Falls - where the entire volume of the Nile is squeezed through a gorge that is only 7 meters wide. |
the national bird - even featured on the flag. its kind of a big deal. |
